Library and Scarecrow Walk

First Day of Library with Gwen

Gwen arrived in our classroom this morning to start our day off with our very first library visit. She brought along her friend Herman the Lobster and we were excited to greet him and share a special time with our librarian Gwen. She read a book to us about friendship called, Bad Apple by Edward Hemingway.   The author and illustrator beautifully address the sensitive topic of friendship ,best friends everywhere and the notice of bullies. The children were fully engaged in the story and is was apparent that they were truly relating to and understanding the content. Hemingway uses humor and simplicity to draw the young reader in.   This story was about an apple who had a worm as a friend! The other apples did not understand and were not very kind to him but he decided that he was happy with the worm and chose to still be his friend!

 Shape Bingo

The growing interest in construction and building  relates in such a meaningful way to our math curriculum; in particular the units that focus on shapes and measurement.   The children have been using a variety of wooden shapes to build on the rug every morning and the conversations and observations the children are sharing as they work is often connected to shapes.  The children are also using many more blocks as they are building in the block area these days.  We often have a huge pile of blocks that we need to re-shelve during clean- up and the children are approaching the work  needed to be done by organizing the blocks by shape.  "I 'll put the squares in . Pass the squares to me and I will be in charge of them", " I  have the this one. I don't know what it's called. Here pass all of the ones that l are just a few of the comments overheard as the children are working.  We decided to introduce the game Shape Bingo today during Choice Time.  The children were very eager to join Cristina in this game and they were most excited to be playing  " a real game with real rules."  The growing social and cooperative skills were so beautifully observed as the children were able to follow the rules of the game, take turns and handle disappointment when they did not have a shape that was called.  Through this board game , children have the opportunity to practice visual discrimination, recognize similarities and differences as well as practice identifying and naming shapes and colors. every child in class chose to play Shape Bingo today!

Supporting Our Community
Fifth grade friends in Middle School have asked us to support their fund raising efforts to help subsidize a trip later in the year.  Original Works is a program where families will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of products featuring their child's own artwork.  The children worked at the drawing table today creating artwork on special paper using markers. They practiced using their fine motor skills to create lines, shapes and assemble scenes of families, houses and spaceships The children love to draw and were delighted to participate in this art activity!

Scarecrow Walk

We were excited to go on our scarecrow walk after playing outdoors today!  Several of the children commented when they arrived at school that they had seen "really funny scarecrows" and that they "saw an Eagles scarecrow!"  We  walked all around the campus area to  look closely at the scarecrows and the children enjoyed the whimsical artistic talents of the students who made them! The third grade classes and the  kindergarten classes  along with their families, partnered to create the wonderful scarecrows that have been placed all around our school.
