Projects Galore!

December 17, 2012

We dedicated this week to completing several fun projects that we have been working on or thinking about for the past few weeks.  The Early Childhood classes will be making ornaments for decorations to be displayed at Winter Fest this Thursday and we decided to collect items in nature on our walks and make beautiful decorations!   We used pine cones, sycamore balls  and acorns to make our Winter Fest decorations.  The children first covered their pine cones with glue and then rolled them in beautiful colored glitter.  They used small, white soft balls and attached them to the pine cones and sycamore balls to make snow features.  The open ended feeling in this art activity was very inviting for our children.  We noticed that many children who are not often interested in working in the Studio were very involved in this activity.

All of Lower School and Early Childhood children are joining together for Meeting For Worship this Wednesday as a community. The query "What does light mean to you?" was posed to all of the children and we have had thoughtful conversations around this topic. Each class was asked to reflect on this topic and then use a display board to express light in any creative way that they chose.  We decided to used all kinds of really cool papers and ribbons that reminded us of light; gold ribbons, shiny silver paper, gold garland etc.  The children absolutely loved this communal, open ended collage project.   Creating art together connects so beautifully to our goals of developing a true sense of community within our classroom.  Connecting with our Lower School community through such a meaningful project helps us to continue to develop a sense of community within our larger AFS world.

We practiced for the Winter Concert on the stage for the first time today! The children were very excited to be on the real stage and did a fantastic job at our first really big rehearsal!
