Welcome back to school ! The children and teachers were all so happy to see each other after our long Spring break. The children greeted each other with affection and picked up in their play as if they had not spent a moment apart! The buzzing of conversation and the vision of collaborative building in the block area and Magna Tiles filled our Cardinal classroom with much joy!
The children were eager to work on their journals today during Choice Time. We asked the children to think about something they did on the Spring break and to draw a picture to reflect that idea. The children had elaborate stories to dictate about their Spring break and this was a meaningful way for us to reconnect after so many days apart. We carried this enthusiasm over to Morning Meeting as the children were eager to share their Spring break experiences with .
We were lucky enough on our very first day back from break to get to spend time with Sam in her art studio! The children found seats at the long tables and Sam talked to us about the process of glazing clay. She passed out the clay bowls the children had created before break, and with the help of some sponges, everyone got to work coating their clay pieces in several different glaze colors using both spreading techniques, and printing style painting. Each child took the time to carefully cover their sculptures, exercising and practicing fine motor skills. Through this art experience the children had the opportunity to explore sensory awareness through paint and in creating unique color combinations. Between the fun of painting with sponges, and the excitement of wondering what our finished bowls will look like, the Cardinals were thrilled to be back in Art with Sam. But the clay glazing wasn't the only activity Sam had in mind for the children. After finishing our clay glazing she passed out paint and brushes and on large pieces of paper challenged the Cardinals to take our brushes and, using line, connect to our friends around the tables. This challenge tied into our unit of shapes and explored ideas of geometry in addition to art.
Outdoor play was wonderful! We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather and the time to explore in our outdoor classroom.
