A Friday Full of Photos

A Friday Full of Fun...

What's Coming Next? : Today, the teachers (encouraged by the children's interest in building and creating artwork) introduced the concept of sculpture and the vocabulary term, artist. The teachers introduced photos of different sculptures and asked the group, "What do you notice?" and "What is a sculpture?" Their ideas were recorded on large chart paper in a language experience chart. Next, the teachers led the children to the term, "artist" and explained that one type of artist is a person who sculpts or creates sculptures. We then shared ideas on a web diagram of what an artist is, what he/she does, and what types of materials they use. This is an interesting direction that our buildings study may be taking us.

Journal Time: What type of sculpture would you make?

Today and over the weekend you can take the opportunity to begin asking questions and noticing any sculptures you may see in your neighborhoods. We encourage you to ask your child, "What a sculpture means to him/her?, "How can you make a sculpture?", "What can a sculpture look like?" and other questions such as this! We invite families to share any homemade sculptures or small sculptures (that are not too fragile) from home. If you have any other thoughts or ideas to share about this possible exciting new direction of our study, please share them with us!
