Español con los Cardenales: mas colores

¡Bienvenidos familia, amigas, y amigos! We began our clase de Español with our traditional morning greeting. The greeting included a song in Spanish followed by each of us taking a turn to say Buenos dia along with a handshake. Afterwards, it was Jacob’s turn to tell us what country we were flying to where Spanish is the spoken language. As he looked at the map that states all the Spanish speaking countries, Jacob pointed to Columbia. We then spread nuestras alas (our wings) and pretended to volar (fly) to this country en avión (on plane). Upon our return, we settled into this Spanish speaking country and gathered in a círculo.

Next, we reviewed the Spanish vocabulary words for some of the basic colores. Using cards that depicted each color, we reviewed the Spanish word as we placed it on the ground. To build energy for learning, we sang the following to the tune of Frère Jacques.

Red is rojo
Green is verde
Blue, azul
Negro, black

Yellow, Amarillo
Purple is morado
Gray is gris
Brown, café
Other than through music, another way to incorporate language practice is through games as they keep the children entertained, interested, and on task. To help Los Cardinales to contextualize the Spanish vocabulary for basic colors, we played an enjoyable game of the “Swatter Game. Two players at a time are given a swatter. A color is called out. Then, using the cards displayed on the ground, the “swatter” swats the correct picture that matches the word. Afterwards, each swatter is asked to pasalo (pass it) to the person next to them. What fun! What an amazing job Los Cardinales did in matching the sound of the word to the matching color card. Go ahead, try it a home.

We finished our class with our traditional ¡Adios. Hasta luego! song and Jacob squeezing la vaca. ¡Gracias, Jacob!

¡Hasta nuestro proximo viaje! (Until our next flight.)

Paz,
Alicia
