SHAPES

Thank you for a wonderful evening together at our Back To School night.  Having the opportunity to make meaningful connections with each other in a relaxed setting was really very special to us.  We hope that you gained greater insight into our program and also feel more comfortable with the new school year.  It was such fun sharing stories with each other about your children and we hope that this is only the beginning of many wonderful times together. The children loved seeing the journal entries you created for them and we invite all families who did not get a chance to draw/write in their child's journal, to do so.

We opened the playdough table at choice time today and the children were most interested in working with the playdough tools. It was very interesting to see how math learning became so apparent.   Children used the tools to cut and mold shapes. Naming these shapes, counting sides of shapes and comparing sizes of shapes became the main focus at this center. The Cardinals enjoyed showing one another their creations and invited others to join in the fun! Shape exploration continued throughout the morning. In our classroom, working with the geoboards became a popular activity as children manipulated the rubber bands around each screw. Outside, the group continued to investigate the natural materials and found rocks as well as other objects. They were so excited to bring them to show an adult and were so proud to identify the shape it resembled by name!

As we gathered inside on the rug, Paula shared some new books with the class that she had picked out with Gwen, our lower school librarian. The Cardinals settled together for some stories and one of the new favorites was Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt. We decided that we would not be happy if we did the same thing every day like the squirrel in the story! The Cardinals unanimously felt that they like to have new choices and different materials to use each day!

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!
