Sharing Thoughts

Our early morning felt busy today, as the children were excited and involved in all of our new routines and responsibilities.  The children are signing –in, working on their journals and answering the question of the day graph before they are getting started with Open Choice. We all welcomed a moment of shared silence as we gathered together to greet each other on the rug for Morning Meeting. We had a wonderful conversation about the calm feelings that settling and quiet can bring to our bodies.  Shannon thought that reading the book Peace Is , by Jane Baskwill  would be a perfect book to extend our discussion.  The children were eager to share their ideas of what peace meant to them and we supported this learning with our first language experience chart.

Language Experience Charts support literacy development for young children.  Children practice expressive language, vocabulary development and learn to connect ideas with words. The social development that is inherited in this process includes respecting ideas of others, listening as others speak and learning to take turns.   Seeing the relationship between spoken words and written words is an important beginning step to reading readiness.

Enjoy the beginning thoughts that some of our  children expressed when thinking about what peace means to them.

What is Peace...
Kendall: It's when you are with your friends and it makes you feel good.
Violet:  It is when  everybody is nice to you.
Evan:  When you love somebody.
Lily:  When you run.
Jayden:  When you are at school and somebody asks if they can play with you.
Carlos:  When people are sad, they want somebody to stay with them.  When you are sad you don't know what to do.
Stella:  Quiet

Throughout the day the children commented on activities and or experiences that felt peaceful.  Join us in this very special ongoing conversation at home.  Share what makes you feel peaceful and enjoy the warmth and pleasure with your children and family that we experienced today.
