Monday Adventures With The Cardinals

Snack time is a favorite time of the day for most of our  Cardinals and we have noticed that the children  love to engage in conversations about the snack food selections for the day.  An ongoing conversation about the 'seeds in fruit' has been overheard on many occasions and the children continue to be amazed and surprised when they discover seeds in the apples!  We thought it would be a interesting science experiment to pose the question "Do you  think all apples have the same number of seeds?"  We decided that this would be an interesting  question to pursue and would begin by taking a walk over to the Acme Supermarket to buy apples further explore this query.  We decided to buy 5 red apples, 5 green apples and 5 yellow apples to use in our exploration of seeds.

We bundled up and began our adventure across campus to the Acme with a goal in mind of purchasing apples! The spontaneous plans for the day were exciting for all of us and the children were so delighted to come up with an idea and were thrilled to be able to see it through on many levels.  The walk was fun and the children loved going shopping with their school friends at the real supermarket!

We spent most of our time visiting in the Produce Department and had the opportunity to play a game where the children identified if the food item belonged to the fruit or the vegetable group and if it were grown above or below the ground. We decided to purchase a few other fruits to look at more closely and to see if they had seeds or not.  We will begin our investigation tomorrow!

The rest of our day was filled with exploration at learning centers.  We continued to work on our community art project which we will exhibit at the Art Show. We are working with the guiding vision  of the color blue for the art show and we are in the process of designing a canvas that reflects a special interpretation of this.

Children continued to work at the art/math center to create three dimensional shapes with collage materials that reflected photographs in the Tana Hoban book Cirlces, Squares and Triangles.

The children have been enjoying working with shape games such as Parquetry Blocks and shape puzzles are learning to work more collaboratively everyday!
