Snowy Friday

March 9, 2013

What a perfect way to close our wonderful week at school but with a beautiful dusting of dancing snowflakes outside our windows! The view was almost magical and the glass walls and windows that surround our room so graciously brought the beauty of outdoors inside our Cardinal classroom...

We began our morning with an early visit with Gwen in the Library. Gwen selected one of her favorite books to read today - Snowmen At Night  by Caralyn Buehner which totally captured the minds and imaginations of our children. The story brings the listener into the magical frosty adventures of roly-poly snowmen as they slide away  to the park for an evening of merrymaking! The illustrations of this book are delightful and this was a ideal choice for a snowy Friday morning!  The children have been enjoying the experience of looking at books in the library and reading with friends after our group read aloud.  We have noticed how much the library visits have changed for our children in their abilities to browse through books and to actually turn the pages with care, read with partners, read independently as well as listen to stories read aloud by Gwen. Borrowing and returning books have become an important part of our visits and the children feel so responsible and 'big kids' like in having this added experience.

Back in the classroom, we had a busy choice time. The studio is full of art inspiration and the Cardinals have been experimenting with new methods of creating art. Today, the teachers began sharing about our Spring Fling and Art Show that will be happening in May. We showed the children many of our ideas for the show. One special connecting piece of the Art Show is that each Early Childhood classroom is provided with a blank canvas, simply invited to create with the color blue. Today, the children began collaging blue pieces of paper to create a blue mosaic that will be assembled in bird shapes on our canvas.

We also began thinking about our individual pieces that we will be displayed in the hallway gallery outside of the Muller Auditorium. We engaged in a process type of painting with watercolors and salt. This provides a textured picture in which the consistency of the paint allows for mixing of colors. A product of vibrant and bright colored illustrations is created using this new technique introduced to our Cardinal artists.

We were happy to enjoy the outside air and feel the cold flurries of snow on our faces as we finished our week together. The Cardinals practiced molding, rolling, and patting snow to create different props for their play. They also seemed to be inspired by our morning story with Gwen as they helped each other roll balls of snow to make snowmen.

Have a wonderful weekend! Hope you enjoy your snow covered night.
