Opening Windows through Open Ended Exploration

Thursday, March 7, 2013

Reflecting back on our week, the teachers have felt a smooth flow to the classroom engagements and happenings in small groups throughout the day. We have connected this to our flexible schedule this week that allowed opportunities for open ended exploration in various centers. This has allowed the children to dig deeper, taking more risks in their play, and encounter new problems that challenge them to work cooperatively to come up with a solution. As this self-directed play has occurred in various centers, the teachers have invited the children to participate in various activities that place math concepts and shapes in a new perspective and challenge the children to look at them in a more investigative way.

Today the children continued to learn about shapes. This morning we opened a table in our art studio for the children to explore shapes made of different materials through an artistic perspective of collaging. The children traced shape outlines, glued sides of shapes and made pictures assembling different shaped pieces of paper together.

As this hands-on sensory experience with geometrical concepts occurred, many other small groups participated in imaginative play throughout the classroom.

The children explored the outdoor space and connected with our natural environment. They participated in sensory experiences with mud, sand and water. They also demonstrated interests in music and movement as well.
