As we began our planning session this week, the first thing we all reflected on was just how many amazing, different 'mini studies' were emerging on the inside track of our class. These are some of the observations we made:
Picture Stories
A group of children have become very interested in writing and creating picture stories. The children who are working in this area generally work collaboratively and combine their interest in drawing with story telling. They draw pictures and then connect the pages together with tape ( which is a project unto itself!) and then dictate a highly imaginative, creative story as the pictures unfold. This story writing and drawing activity started with two children several days ago and now has moved into a larger contingent. Hanging the story pictures on our walls and clothesline seems to have stimulated further interest amongst children in the class.
Maga Tiles - Animal Shelters/Farms/Family Role Play
The group that gravitates to the Magna Tiles are fully immersed in both building complex structures with the Magna Tiles as well as engaging in imaginative play. The theme and role play of family takes hold and the children then incorporate the toy animals into their play. The animal often take on roles of 'mommy giraffe, baby elephant, sister duck..." and the children work cooperatively in this area for extended periods of time. The structures and animals become the props for imaginative role play.
Dramatic Play Area
The house and kitchen area have been very active areas of our classroom over the past several weeks. The play has evolved and the level of independence amongst the children is clearly observed on a daily basis. The children are creating their own imaginative role play situations and are using the props and dress-ups to facilitate their role play and learning. Some of the common themes we have observed are parties, family gatherings, pets and doctor. It is fascinating to see how the children navigate the different role play situations and this too reflects their growing social skills. They are making connections with their peers and they are figuring out what they need to do to make their play work together.
A Few More Photo's of Our Day...
We worked on our journals this morning and we continued to create tissue paper stained glass designs. Donny shared a favorite book from the Elephant and Piggy series called I Broke My Trunk which the children loved listening to. We had a glorious time playing outdoors on this beautiful day and enjoyed the time outdoor play space.
